Martin Schongauer. Madonna rose arbor 1473
Schongauer Martin. A famous painting of the Madonna in the rose arbor 1473 the Single painting, although undoubtedly brush Schongauer. "Madonna in rose garden" was painted for the high altar of the Church of Saint Martin in Colmar, the home town of the artist. In the Baroque era the picture was heavily cropped on all sides, so that the image of the Madonna, now fill a significant part of the space of the altar Board, gained monumentality. Figures of the virgin and the infant Christ are written in strict linear style, more characteristic of the engraving (most of the works of Schongauer made in this technique). With extraordinary thoroughness characteristic of the masters of the Northern Renaissance, the artist depicts all the elements of the picture: fancy ornament gazebo with woven into a figures of musicians, twigs and flowers of roses in the background, elegant crown supported by angels above the head of Mary. Perfectly modeled the folds on the luxurious attire of the mother of God. The altar composition, written with exquisite, bright colors, produces a feeling of magnificence. The picture is at all times popular. Some researchers have even compared her with the famous "Sistine Madonna" of Raphael, perhaps in an effort to emphasize the importance of works for German painting. In 1972, the painting was stolen from the Church of Saint Martin, where it had been since the moment of creation. However, the work failed to find, and now it can be seen in the Dominican Church in Colmar.
