Caspar David Friedrich. Wanderer above the Sea of Fog. 1817-1818
A famous painting, one of the best works of the famous German romantic artist of the iconic painting for the whole of romanticism in painting. The canvas depicts the wanderer, standing on a dark steep cliff and contemplating mountain landscape shrouded in mist. The hero of the leaf stands with his back to the viewer, lost in thought, his hair fluttering in the wind. Many critics believe that Friedrich has depicted on the canvas itself. The landscape is, most likely, depicts the Elbe peschanskoye mountains located nearby to Dresden, where the artist lived. Sketches for the painting he did in the open air, and the artwork itself wrote in their explanation already in the workshop that, in General, is characteristic of his creative method. The landscapes of Frederick not simply reproduce nature, they carry symbolic connotations and deeper meaning. The landscape is a reflection of the mood of the artist, that's why the work of FRIDE ha was loved by the Surrealists, who sought to paint on the canvases are images of his inner world. "The wanderer above the sea of fog" combines an amazing immediacy in the image of nature with a spiritual and mystical feeling seen. Mountains and clouds are part of the hero soul, as he is part of them. The film is based on dramatic conflict: man dominates the landscape, and at the same time, it is quite small, surrounded by majestic cliffs, distant mountain peaks and the boundless sea of fog.
